Over the past two years, we have been working closely with our very good partner, Second Chance Cars (SCC), an innovative local non-profit organization in Concord that refurbishes used cars with the help of vocational high school students. The cars are awarded, at a nominal cost, to give “their new owners a chance to get, keep or grow a living-wage job and the possibility of achieving their full potential.” SVdP Concord-Carlisle has been instrumental in encouraging car donations and finding recipients who would benefit from this program.
A unique aspect of the Second Chance Cars approach is the award ceremony that marks the presentation of the car to its new owner. All involved in the process are invited to attend, including the car donor, SCC personnel, the vocational high school team that worked on the car, and the recipient and their family. These ceremonies are recorded and two videos are shown below. Annie’s story was also featured in an article in the Concord Bridge Newspaper.
If you have a gently used car that you can donate, know someone who may have one, or have questions about this, please call the St. Vincent de Paul Society ‘hotline’ at 978-369-7442, extension 229. One of our volunteers will call you back. Your support can help a local Concord/Carlisle family in need of a car.
